5 most important books – Dalai Lama supported the idea of the‘5 in Lodz’ library

The ‘5 in Lodz’ library received books from one of the most important world leaders – spiritual and political leader of Tibet, His Holiness Dalai Lama. It is a great honour and a testimony to the fact that the initiative of the EC1 Łódź Foundation finds approval in the eyes of the world’s greatest moral authorities.

A refugee living in India and the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Dalai Lama donated 5 books which he considers the most important books in his life.

The ‘5 in Lodz’ library, which is being built by the EC1 Łódź Foundation, will be built of sets of 5 books which their contributors believe to be the most important books of their lives – those which influenced them to choose their paths in life and shaped their moral values. The Foundation asks prominent personalities from all around the world – artists, philosophers, academics, politicians, sportsmen, social activists, human rights defenders, inventors, representatives of different cultures, religions and life philosophies – to contribute their books to the project. Each set of five books will be packed in a hand-made transparent box. As a result, a unique installation shall be created. It will become one of the most important elements of the New Centre of Łódź.

Amongst the most important acquisitions of the Library, apart from the books handed by Dalai Lama, there are sets given by Lech Wałęsa and the prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al Saud. Cultural diversity shows that ‘5 in Lodz’ can become a place teaching respect for the pluralism of life philosophy and openness to different perspectives.

New Centre of Łódź and Kobro Square

The New Centre of Łódź is a pioneer operation on a living city, both in respect of matter and idea. The concept of spatial development for this area was prepared by a Luxemburg urban planner, Rob Krier, in 2007. The starting point for the entire project is the idea to create a high speed railway line under a city. At the same time, the New Center of Łódź will be a place which will define the character of Łódź as a city of culture and art for a long time.
