A big locomotive has pulled into town... The Tuwim's locomotive slowly starts in Łódź

The Investment Bureau of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. (Polish National Railways) has put out a tender for a project of a multimodal station, which will replace today's Łódź Fabryczna station. Its platforms will be 16 metres below the ground. It is another step (after signing the contract for modernisation of the Łódź Widzew station) towards launching the high-speed railway in Poland and beginning the ‘operation on an open city.’

The subject of the tender is designing and constructing of an integrated junction which will constitute the multimodal Łódź Fabryczna station, located in the area of the New Centre of Łódź. The investment consists in construction of facilities, digging deep excavations and securing the construction site, as well as removing the soil, demolition of the present facilities and infrastructure.

The investment will be located within the area delimited by the following streets: Kilińskiego, Narutowicza, Składowa and Węglowa, and in the area of the present Łódź Fabryczna station and its surroundings. The soil from the excavations and demolitions will be transported by rail to the region of the Łódź Widzew station, and then by a railway track built by the contractor and/or by road transport into the area between Henrykowska and Kosodrzewiny St.

In order to tender for the contract, an offer must be submitted until 5 January, 2010. The contractor will be obliged to execute the order within 36 months.

New Centre of Łódź and Kobro Square

The New Centre of Łódź is a pioneer operation on a living city, both in respect of matter and idea. The concept of spatial development for this area was prepared by a Luxemburg urban planner, Rob Krier, in 2007. The starting point for the entire project is the idea to create a high speed railway line under a city. At the same time, the New Center of Łódź will be a place which will define the character of Łódź as a city of culture and art for a long time.
